Dr Shirmohammadi is a Professor of Environmental Science and Technology (ENST) & Asso. Dean for Research & Asso. Director of Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) at the University of Maryland College Park. He is also an Affiliate Professor with the Fischell Department of Bioengineering, Dept. of Civil and Enviro. Engineering, and MEES (Marine Estuarine Environmental Sciences).
On the research side, Dr. Shirmohammadi has had multiple cooperative projects with USDA-ARS including
his support for watershed scale modeling in a CEAP project (nationally funded project) in Choptank
watershed, Maryland. He is also an active participant and member of a multi-state project S-1042 (Watershed
Scale TMDL Modeling). Currently, Dr. Shirmohammadi has one Ph.D. student working on the relationship
between incidences of human cancer and drinking water quality on spatial coordinate system using GIS
platform. He actively participates in writing grant proposals, presents his research results in scientific
conferences, and publishes his research results in refereed journals. As a Co-PI, he helped secure two
large competitive grants in 2012, one from US-EPA in the amount of about $700k for 3 years and the other
from USDA-NIFA in the amount of $620k for 3 years. US-EPA project deals with the storm water
management in urban and suburban ecosystems and the USDA-NIFA project deals with the sustainable
management of agro-ecosystems. Both projects are creating Diagnostic Decision Support Systems
(DDSS) for sustainable management of landscape using community empowerment and education. These two projects are also using watershed models to assess the hydrologic patterns.
