Dr. Carl Friedrichs is a professor in the School of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary, Director of the Coastal Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics Laboratory, and Chair of the Physical Sciences Department at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. He received a BA in Geology from Amherst College and a PhD in Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program. Dr. Friedrichs's long-term research goals are to better understand the fundamental aspects of coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics at time-and length-scales important to geology, biogeochemistry, and ecology. His technical approach involves numerical modeling, analytical theory, field observations, and the intersection of all three in the utilization of coastal observation and prediction systems.
