Dr. Paul Bukaveckas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University and holds a joint appointment with the Center for Environmental Studies. He received his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1989 and a B.S. degree from DePaul University in 1981. His area of expertise is Ecosystems Ecology with a focus on biogeochemical cycles and food web dynamics in aquatic environments. His research focuses on plankton communities in rivers, impoundments, lakes and estuaries. He has conducted field investigations in the Midwestern, Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States as well as in Eastern Europe and Western Australia. He is a two-time Fulbright recipient, and was awarded a Gledden Senior Fellowship by the Government of Australia. Publications arising from this work include thirty-five peer-reviewed journal articles and two book chapters. He is the recent author of the chapter on Rivers for the Encyclopedia of Inland Waters. His current work focuses on stream restoration and the causes of algal blooms in rivers and estuaries.
