Dr. Patrick Megonigal

Institution: Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)
Expertise: Biogeochemistry, Coastal/Estuarine Sampling and Monitoring, Ecology, Methane Cycling, Sea Level Rise
Chesapeake Management Areas: Vital Habitats, Climate Resiliency
Research interests: I am an ecosystem ecologist with research interests in carbon and greenhouse gas cycling in wetlands and forests, particularly as they relate to global change. I lead the Smithsonian’s Global Change Research wetland, home to the longest running climate change experiment in the world and several other experiments that concern tidal wetland responses to elevated CO2, temperature, sea level rise, nitrogen pollution and Phragmites invasion. The goal of my research is to understand the biogeochemical processes stability of tidal wetlands faced with accelerated sea level rise. I have particular expertise in methane dynamics.
