Shoreline and pier at the Naval Weapons Station Norfolk in Yorktown

The Chesapeake Research Consortium is funding the design of a nearshore habitat restoration project on the York River in Virginia. The $40,000 in funding support will enable the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to develop a detailed blueprint and monitoring plan for an intertidal oyster restoration project along the shoreline and pier at the Naval Weapons Station Norfolk in Yorktown. When the restoration blueprint is implemented in the future, the project would provide habitat for oysters, other shellfish and finfish, and improve the resiliency of the facility by reducing wave energy and shoreline erosion. Funding for this design was provided by NOAA and is one example of how partners are coming together to focus on habitat in the region.
