Life After Internships

How do we make sure that interns are getting the most out of their internships, both for sake of the intern’s future career path and filling the pipeline with a competent workforce? Summer internships should have implications beyond August, with impacts to the intern and the field. One tool for mentors and students looking for internships is the language of the five competencies: Multicultural Awareness, Ethical Reasoning, Systems Thinking, Professional Development, and Civic Responsibility.

We heard from Michael Zeman about the origins of the competencies, followed by three C-StREAM interns presenting their innovative research and how the competencies took shape over for them over the course of the summer.

Speakers:

  • Michael Zeman, Director of the Student Engagement Network, Penn State University
  • Adriana Murphy, 2021 C-StREAM Intern, Virginia Institute of Marine Science
  • Katie Delph, 2021 C-StREAM Intern, Morgan State University’s Patuxent Environmental and Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL)
  • Joshua Ramirez, 2021 C-StREAM Intern, NOAA’s Chesapeake Bay Office
