C-StREAM Welcomes New Cohort of Summer Fellows
The Chesapeake Student Recruitment, Early Advisement, and Mentoring (C-StREAM) program is focused on recruiting, advising, and mentoring talented college students, particularly from groups typically underrepresented in the sciences, to pursue careers in environmental research, protection and restoration. This time of year, CRC Staff and partners busily prepare to welcome a new cohort of summer fellows eager to dig into the exciting work waiting for them at their host institutions and organizations.
The COVID-19 pandemic certainly threw a wrench in our plans, but resilience and adaptability are the names of our Chesapeake Bay game! We are proud to say that we will still be able to offer these valuable experiences to students. Like many other programs, we are moving the C-StREAM program online. This shift in programming will allow our summer 2020 C-StREAM fellows the same opportunities to explore professions; engage in research, learning, and analysis projects; and develop professional skills and networks while working within the bounds of our current reality. Mentoring teams are busy evolving previous project plans to incorporate the use of remote technology. We hope that with these efforts, our students will feel as engaged and connected as possible while implementing social distancing and other best practices to ensure the safety of everyone involved in this summer’s program and to do our part as global citizens to slow the spread of this pandemic.
This summer, 9 students (3 three returning C-StREAM Fellows from last summer!) will be embedded within CRC member institutions, the Chesapeake Bay Program Office, and at the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office. Our 2020 C-StREAM Fellows and their postings are listed below. You will not want to miss next quarter’s newsletter, in which we will introduce you to each of our 2020 Fellows and talk about the contributions they are making to the Chesapeake Bay’s restoration and management. Stay tuned!
