In partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Chesapeake Bay Office, CRC offers paid, twelve-week summer internships in a range of fields including fisheries management, habitat assessment, ecology, scientific field support, data analysis and modeling, and environmental policy development. The internships combine field-based experiences with administrative and technical support duties and offer a unique opportunity to contribute to large-scale, long-term ecological research critical to understanding Bay habitats and living resources.
This summer, three positions were offered.
In the environmental literacy position, Emmett Gartner will support efforts to develop environmental literacy programming for students in K-12 schools. He will help develop communications and outreach products and assisting educators. Emmett was born in Annapolis, MD and is currently a junior majoring in Environmental Studies at the University of Vermont. He is the managing editor of a student-founded environmental magazine at UVM and a student leader for the Outing Club (a club that leads hiking trips).
One field technician intern will support field work on hydrographic observing systems in Chesapeake Bay. Some of the tasks of the position include prepping for surveys, data acquisition and processing using hydrographic software, and data archival. This summer, Rieley Auger, a junior at UMD, will be fulfilling the position. Rieley studies Environmental Science with a concentration in Land Use and a minor in Sustainability. She is involved in an independent research project on water usage in Syria, the Special Olympics and the geography club on campus.
Finally, the oceanographic instrumentation support intern will assist with instrumentation, data entry, and field work on oceanographic observing systems in the Chesapeake Bay. Jocelyn Dazzo, a freshman at Salisbury University, will serve in the role this summer. She is studying Biology and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Chemistry.
