The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office (NCBO) and Chesapeake Research Consortium (CRC) seek a summer intern for late May through mid-August 2019 (12 weeks) to assist our Environmental Literacy programs. NCBO’s Environmental Literacy and Partnerships branch encourages and supports efforts in K-12 education to develop and implement comprehensive environmental literacy programs. We do this primarily through two programs, the Chesapeake Bay-Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) program, and the Environmental Science Training Center (ESTC). B-WET is a competitive grant program that provides funding to organizations who deliver watershed education to K-12 students and provide related professional development to K-12 teachers. The ESTC offers educators the knowledge and tools to deliver up-to-date science information to the teachers educating the next generation of Bay stewards. It does this through in-person trainings and via online learning.

The intern will assist these two programs by developing communications and outreach products, such as updating web content, developing infographics and message boxes, and creating several case studies that highlighting successful B-WET grant projects. The intern will also review B-WET grant reports and update grant databases, as well as conduct a comprehensive review of ESTC evaluations. There will be several opportunities to participate and assist with teacher and environmental educator professional development trainings conducted by ESTC staff.

Opportunities: In this position, an intern will work side-by-side with professionals at the forefront of environmental literacy policy and program development. The intern will hone skills for developing communications products viewed by large and diverse audiences. The intern will work both independently and as part of a team to create compelling and meaningful case studies about environmental literacy projects. The internship also provides the opportunity to fine-tune skills for data analysis, synthesis, and interpretation.

Deliverables:

  • Summation of ESTC evaluation feedback and the 2018 ESTC participant survey.
  • Develop 3-5 B-WET grant case studies.
  • Update B-WET webpage and comprehensive grant database.
  • Presentation to NCBO staff at the conclusion of the internship summarizing work conducted.

Requirements:

  • Strong writing and communications skills.
  • Experience developing communication products and webpages.
  • Familiarity with data management and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to work and reason independently.
  • Must be a college-level student entering sophomore, junior, or senior year of undergraduate study.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and willing to undergo a security background check.

Work Location and Duration:
This position will be stationed out of the Environmental Science Training Center in Oxford, Maryland. The position will begin in mid-May and conclude in mid-August (12 weeks). Computer and phone services will be provided.

Compensation:
The intern will be reimbursed at the end of each month, for a total of up to $4,500 for the equivalent of 12 weeks of full-time activities (480 hours). Funds are available to compensate interns for occasionally required work-related travel. Candidates should expect to follow a normal weekday work schedule (roughly 9-5, M-F) with occasional variations for possible field work or other activities. No benefits are provided. A small housing stipend is available for those needing it, and we offer assistance in arranging local housing.
